Center for Elder Law & Justice Names New President of Board of Directors

Buffalo, NY, April 1, 2026 - The Center for Elder Law & Justice (CELJ) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ann Monroe as the newest President of its Board of Directors.

Monroe brings a wealth of experience in the fields of health care and philanthropy along with a deep commitment to advancing equity and protecting the rights of older adults and vulnerable populations. As Board President, she will help guide CELJ’s strategic direction, support organizational growth, and strengthen its impact across Western New York.

“Since joining the board in 2020, Ann has brought a strong focus on systems improvement that has enriched our work and strengthened our organization.” said Karen Nicolson, CEO/Executive Director of CELJ “She is exceptionally well positioned to lead CELJ into the future as we confront the ongoing challenges of a weakening social safety net.”

Monroe has served as a member of CELJ’s Board of Directors since 2020, actively contributing to initiatives that support older adults, individuals with disabilities, and those facing economic insecurity. In her new role, Monroe will work closely with board members and senior staff to advance CELJ’s mission and ensure the organization remains responsive to community needs.

“I have always had great respect for CELJ and they work they do.” said Monroe “Having the opportunity to be on the Board gave me a closer look at how they accomplish success for the people of Western New York. I am honored to chair the Board of Directors and help lead it into its next generation.”

Monroe relocated to Buffalo in 2003 to serve as the inaugural President of the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York, a role she held until her retirement in 2017. Prior to her move, she was based in California, where she worked with the California Health Care Foundation and served as an officer at Blue Cross of California.

CELJ also extends its sincere gratitude to outgoing Board President Steven Bengart, Esq. for his 12 years of leadership and service.
